Eugene W. (Chip) Brees, II Eugene W. (Chip) Brees joined the firm in May 2002, after almost 26 years as a personal injury defense lawyer. Given his background and trial expertise, Chip adds a unique component to the firm's plaintiff practice. Chip was born in Alabama, raised in Maryland (south of the Mason-Dixon line), and educated in Texas. He is both an Aggie (BS from A&M) and a Longhorn (law degree from UT). After graduating from law school in 1976, Chip began working for the Dallas law firm of Thompson & Knight. He was a trial lawyer in the Dallas office until 1986, when he moved to the firm's Austin office. During his almost 26 years on the defense side, Chip did a wide variety of insurance defense and personal injury work – including medical malpractice, product liability, chemical and drug liability, automobile and industrial accidents, toxic tort, mass tort, and insurance bad faith – in addition to a variety of business litigation. He was national counsel for a major manufacturer in fluorochemical litigation, and was Texas counsel for other manufacturers. Chip tried over 75 cases to verdict in both state and federal courts – the vast majority of those cases resulting in defense verdicts for Chip's clients. Despite his success on the defense side of the docket, for many years Chip felt an urge to represent plaintiffs. He had empathy for the plight of persons who were injured at the hands of the defendants he was representing. In May 2002, Chip was offered the opportunity to join this firm and transfer his expertise to the plaintiff side. Chip jumped at the opportunity and since then, his practice has focused on representing injured persons and their families involving serious injuries or death. Many of his cases are medical malpractice cases involving birth injuries or brain damage. Chip continues to practice in both state and federal courts. He represents plaintiffs in cases against doctors, nurses, hospitals, and the United States government (Federal Tort Claim Act cases). Chip also enjoys representing individuals and companies in business disputes. His business litigation experience includes representing clients in breach of contract, unfair competition, antitrust, and trademark cases. Chip is certified in Personal Injury Trial Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. He was named as one of the Best Lawyers in Austin (personal injury) by Austin Monthly magazine and as a Super Lawyer by Texas Monthly magazine. Chip is a member of the Capital Area Trial Lawyers Association, Texas Trial Lawyers Association, and Association of Trial Lawyers of America. He is also a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates. Chip and his wife Amy have three children. Chip’s two sons have always been active in sports, and Chip continues to enjoy watching their exploits on the playing field. Chip’s daughter is an aspiring dancer – a talent that she definitely did not inherit from Chip. Amy is a realtor and a chauffeur for their daughter. Amy and Chip enjoy Broadway musicals and have been active in the Paramount Theater. Chip is a Deacon at First Baptist Church and serves on various church committees. Mr. Brees is admitted to practice before the State Bar of Texas; the United States District Courts, Northern, Southern, Eastern and Western Districts of Texas; and the U.S. Court of Appeals, Fifth Circuit. |
