Michelle M. Cheng Michelle Cheng joined the firm in 1996. She grew up in a suburb of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and received her undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering in 1992 from the University of Michigan. After college, Michelle escaped the cold weather by coming to Austin to work as an engineer at Motorola, where she designed engine controller chips for Ford automobiles. She soon decided that she wanted a career in which she could work more closely with people, however, and left Motorola to attend the University of Texas School of Law. Ms. Cheng practices both trial and appellate law and is also a certified mediator. She enjoys staying active in the community and currently serves as Vice-Chair of the Travis County Bar Association Litigation Section and sits on the Advisory Board of the Capital Area AIDS Legal Project. Michelle also sits on the Board of Directors for the Austin Young Lawyers Association and has co-chaired a number of their committees, including their Member Services Committee (2003-present); their Bench Bar Committee (2001-present); their Legal Services for the Poor Committee (2002-2003); and their Continuing Legal Education Committee (2002-2003). She was also chosen to participate in the 2002-2003 class of Leadership Austin. Michelle previously served as Co-Chair of the Travis County Bar Association Medical-Legal Committee and helped organize a blood drive that resulted in the donation of over 160 pints of blood for the community. She also sat on the Board of Directors of the Travis County Women Lawyers’ Association from 2000-2003 and served as co-chair of their Membership and Farris-Cisneros Scholarship Committees. Ms. Cheng is a member of a number of other organizations, including the Association of Trial Lawyers of America; the State Bar of Texas; the Texas Trial Lawyers Association; the Capital Area Trial Lawyers Association; the Asian-American Bar Association of Austin; and the Federal Bar Association. Michelle and her husband, Chris, enjoy live theater of all kinds. They have one “child,” a Shetland sheepdog named Buddy. Ms. Cheng is admitted to practice before the State Bar of Texas; the United States District Court, Western District of Texas; and the U.S. Court of Appeals, Fifth Circuit. |
